Elefantenzahn mit Messingapplikation
(Ebenund Ada-Schwerter)
und grün gefärbtem Flechtbanddekor
Unbekannte Werkstatt der Elfenbeinschitzergilde Igbesanmwan / Königreich Benin, Nigeria, 17.–19. Jh. / Elfenbein, Messingblech, Eisennägel / Ankauf von Christoph Schultz, 1902, Inv. Nr. C 3645

Elephant Tusk with Brass Applications (Ebenand Ada-Swords) and Green-Coloured Interlace Ornaments
Unidentified workshop of the Ivory Carvers Guild Igbesanmwan / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 17th-19th century / Ivory, brass sheet, iron nails / Acquired from Christoph Schultz, 1902, Inv. no. C 3645
It is no longer possible to reconstruct on which altars these tusks once stood, which are decorated with interlaced bands and with carved or applied sword and mudfish motifs. The symbolism and combination of brass and ivory suggest a connection with the king. Known for their durability, these materials were part of the king’s privilege.
The greenish colour of the interlaced bands results from a former brass sheet application.
